Swine flu

1. There are currently no flu vaccinations that can prevent an attack by the H1N1 virus. The current stockpile was derived from the flu epidemic a few years ago caused by the H3N1 and related viruses, so they will not be effective here.  2. The two antiviral drugs approved by the FDA for treatment and prophylaxis of the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus are Tamiflu    (oseltamivir phosphate) and Relenza (zanamivir). However, health experts caution against using them routinely for several reasons: the emergence of resistant strains when used in mild flu infections, its ineffectiveness when given more than 48 hours after the onset of flu, the presence of side-effects (in particular, psychiatric disturbances, heart and lung disorders and deaths in children).  3. Should masks be used? Certainly not, the ordinary ones as they do not filter small particles that carry the culprit viruses.    You need to get the N95 respirators which block off 95% (hence the name) of small particles which carry the...

Mobile Phone Etiquettes

Mobile Phone Etiquettes We all love our mobiles... we talk, we text, we listen to music and we stay in touch. Can we ever imagine a day without our mobile? No never. Yes we know what an important part of our lives the mobile phone is. However, all good things should be enjoyed responsibly. How it cheeses us off when someone takes a call in the middle of Shahrukh proposing to Deepika! Or for that matter when you have to listen to the loud mouth bragging about his date last evening standing next to you at the bus stop. Yes we know how that feels and that's why here are a few points to remember when using your mobile. We call these basic mobile etiquettes and if we all pay a little attention to these, life would be so much less annoying for all of us. So here goes... You should strictly adhere to the rules/ regulations/ orders/ instructions as issued from time to time by the Government/ Authorities in School, Colleges, Offices, etc. In public places, the mobile phone should be kept in ...

SAVE EARTH

SAVE EARTHForward by Aamani bhagi Please find some time to read this article…… I would like to share a few tips that I have begun to implement in my life. I urge you too, the reader, to follow this simple advice as you are a citizen of this planet. 1. There is a cute small round press button at the bottom right corner of almost all monitors: Please make use of this, 2. Stop printing out Harry Porter, Jeffrey Archer and other e-books. This is a classic example of paper wastage. 3.If you have forgotten to give double-side prints, make sure you make use of the empty sides as scribbling pads or for your kids' imposition . . . . 4.Take two minutes from your busy schedule before hurrying back home to shut down the computer. 5.All of us are big time Googlers. Have you heard of the Blackle search engine? Blackle (Google powered) is a search engine designed all in Rich Black so that your system consumes less power. So change your homepage. 6.Plastic bags these days indeed come in bright and...

Why is wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger ?

Why is wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger ? This is interesting. Try it out ! Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger? There is a beautiful and convincing explanation given by the Chinese..... Thumb represents your Parents Second (Index) finger represents your Siblings Middle finger represents your-Self Fourth (Ring) finger represents your Life Partner & the Last (Little) finger represents your children Firstly, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers and hold them together - back to back Secondly, open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb - tip to tip (As shown in the figure below): Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing the parents)..., they will open, because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong, and have to leave you sooner or later. Please join your thumbs as before and separate your Index fingers (representing siblings)... .., they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have the...

20 Ways to Get Mentally Tough

1. When you face a setback, think of it as a defining moment that will lead to a future accomplishment. 2. When you encounter adversity, remember, the best don't just face adversity; they embrace it, knowing it's not a dead end but a detour to something greater and better. 3. When you face negative people, know that the key to life is to stay positive in the face of negativity, not in the absence of it. After all, everyone will have to overcome negativity to define themselves and create their success. 4. When you face the naysayer's, remember the people who believed in you and spoke positive words to you. 5. When you face critics, remember to tune them out and focus only on being the best you can be. 6. When you wake up in the morning, take a morning walk of gratitude and prayer. It will create a fertile mind ready for success. 7. When you fear, trust. Let your faith be greater than your doubt. 8. When you fail, find the lesson in it, and then recall a time when you have su...

However, if there is moderate rainfall but the tide is in excess of 4.50 meters at the same time, the city of Mumbai is sure to get flooded. How to handle a bad boss. 8 tips

It happened again. Maybe the boss broke his or her word, bad-mouthed you, or torpedoed your promotion. You're not surprised. Your boss already ignores your ideas, talks down to you, and expects you to be a mind-reader. And that doesn't even count the eavesdropping. What's worse, your boss won't talk about it with you, telling you to "move on." as if nothing ever happened. OK, you've been saddled with a bad boss. Having to answer to a boss is a fact of working life. But what are your options when you're undermined by the person whose goodwill you need? Sure, you can lash out or call human resources. Unfortunately, companies are like Vegas casinos: The house always wins. Still, you have options. When the anger starts to boil, consider the following: Don't act immediately Initially, you'll want to fight back. You may fantasise about writing a blistering critique of your rotten boss. . . and e-mailing it to the CEO. And those thoughts aren't ne...

Seven Tips for Management Success

Seven Tips for Management Success An effective manager pays attention to many facets of management, leadership and learning within organizations. So, it's difficult to take the topic of "management success" and say that the following ten items are the most important for management success. I will, however, suggest seven management success skills without which I don't believe you can be a successful manager. The most important issue in management success is being a person that others want to follow. Every action you take during your career in an organization helps determine whether people will one day want to follow you. A successful manager, one whom others want to follow: 1)Builds effective and responsive interpersonal relationships. Reporting staff members, colleagues and executives respect his or her ability to demonstrate caring, collaboration, respect, trust and attentiveness. 2)Communicates effectively in person, print and email. Listening and two-way feedback c...

16 Things I Wish They Had Taught Me in School

16 Things I Wish They Had Taught Me in School Published by Henrik Edberg April 2nd, 2008 in Productivity, Relaxation, Personal Development, People Skills, Career & Work and Success. I am 28 now. I don’t think about the past or regret things much these days. But sometimes I wish that I had known some of things I have learned over the last few years a bit earlier. That perhaps there had been a self-improvement class in school. And in some ways there probably was. Because some of these 16 things in this article a teacher probably spoke about in class. But I forgot about them or didn’t pay attention. Some of it would probably not have stuck in my mind anyway. Or just been too far outside my reality at the time for me to accept and use. But I still think that taking a few hours from all those German language classes and use them for some personal development classes would have been a good idea. Perhaps for just an hour a week in high school. It would probably be useful for many student...

Nice one

Recession Story This Story is about a man who once upon a time was selling "Wada-Pav" by the roadside. He was illiterate, so he never read newspapers. He was hard of hearing, so he never listened to the radio. His eyes were weak, so he never watched television. But enthusiastically, he sold lots of "Wada-pavs". He was smart enough to offer some attractive schemes to increase his sales. His sales and profit went up.. He ordered more a more raw material and buns and use to sale more. He recruited few more supporting staff to serve more customers. He started offering home deliveries. Eventually he got himself a bigger and better stove. As his business was growing, the son, who had recently graduated from College, joined his father. Then something strange happened. The son asked, "Dad, aren't you aware of the great recession that is coming our way?" The father replied, "No, but tell me about it." The son said, "The international situation is...
1. Plan your week on Sunday night Look at your work calendar and plan your week on Sunday night or Monday morning. This would include important meetings, deliverables, a brief summary of things that are pending from last week and any tasks to be achieved during the week. Though this might look like a time management tip, at the end of the week, on Friday night when you re-visit what you have achieved over the last five days, the satisfaction is immense. 2. Undertake activities that you are passionate about even though it might not be in your job profile Start an initiative that you would love to do irrespective of whether it is required for you to do or not. Send a daily newsletter to your team on the topics that most of them will be interested. Do a presentation on the topic that you are passionate about. Organise a small sports event for your team. Call everyone in your team for a team coffee, breakfast or lunch break Appreciate colleagues in your team or in a cross-functional team ...

60 uses of salt

Although you may not realize it, simple table salt has a great number of uses other than simply seasoning your food. The following list will give you sixty uses of salt, many of which you probably didn't realize: Soak stained hankies in salt water before washing. Sprinkle salt on your shelves to keep ants away. Soak fish in salt water before descaling; the scales will come off easier. Put a few grains of rice in your salt shaker for easier pouring. Add salt to green salads to prevent wilting. Test the freshness of eggs in a cup of salt water; fresh eggs sink; bad ones float. Add a little salt to your boiling water when cooking eggs; a cracked egg will stay in its shell this way. A tiny pinch of salt with egg whites makes them beat up fluffier. Soak wrinkled apples in a mildly salted water solution to perk them up. Rub salt on your pancake griddle and your flapjacks won't stick. Soak toothbrushes in salt water before you first use them; they will last longer. Use salt to clean...

The Hand

The Hand . . . Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful. Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her student's art. And they were. But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher's true child of misery, frail and unhappy. As other children played at recess, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes. Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand. His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of ...

A Leader Should Know How to Manage Failure . . .

A Leader Should Know How to Manage Failure . . . (Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam at Wharton India Economic forum , Philadelphia , March 22,2008 ) Question: Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure? Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project director of India 's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India 's 'Rohini' satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal. By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the comput...

valen-time day

The Gujarati Story of Valentine's Day. In spite of what you have been told by everyone, the truth is that Valentine's Day originated hundreds of years ago, in India, and to top it all, in Gujarat!! It is a well known fact that Gujarati men, specially the Patels, continually mistreat and disrespect their wives (Patelianis). One fine day, it happened to be the 14th day of February, one brave Pateliani, having had enough "torture" by her husband, finally chose to rebel by beating him up with a Velan (rolling pin). Yes....the same Velan which she used daily, to make chapattis for him....only this time, instead of the dough, it was the husband who was flattened. This was a momentous occasion for all Gujarati women and a revolt soon spread, like wild fire, with thousands of housewives beating up their husbands with the Velan. There was an outburst of moaning "chapatti-ed" husbands all over Anand and Amdavad. The Patel men-folk quickly learnt their lesson and start...
